Not a Mormon Cricket

Sorry, not a Mormon Cricket

As if drought and plague are not enough, farmers from Nevada to Montana are being over run by Mormon Crickets. Mormon crickets are a type of katydid and are the same species that ruined the crops of the original Mormon settlers in the 1800’s. Outbreaks in the west have increased in recent years as the changes in weather have created an environment that is hot and dry – a perfect breeding ground for them.

Drought conditions encourage Mormon cricket outbreaks, and according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), these outbreaks can result in billions of insects, which cause major economic and ecological losses to rangeland and cropland.

Hopefully we are not heading towards famine.
