The United States is the largest global consumer of Potash, the potassium-rich mineral, yet it imports 93 percent of its potash. Except for Canada, most of the world’s potash comes from high-risk jurisdictions, such as Belarus, China, and Russia.

According to Sagepotash.com, “All types of fertilizers are increasing in price, but potash is rising the fastest.² In just the half year between the spring and fall of 2021, potash prices have gone up 54%. Since spring 2020, potash prices have skyrocketed by 87%.”

Potash is an essential ingredient in fertilizer that helps increase crop yields and improves disease resistance. As world wide demand and supply chain obstacles continue to negatively impact both the price and availability of fertilizer, the Canadian Company, Sage Potash, is looking to Utah to help with these shortages.

They believe that the Sage Plain Potash Property, located in the Paradox Basin, potentially contains roughly two billion tons of potash. Utah also has a reputation as a mining friendly community with a steady supply of experience workers and there is a steady demand in the United States for the product. “

Local production will save distributors and co-ops $150-200/ton in transportation costs usually incurred from imported potash.”

Hopefully this will soon be a bright spot in the fertilizer market. Stay tuned for updates.
