I love it when a plan solves multiple problems at the same time.
The University of California has a problem and a solution. Lower-income students are always looking for ways to pay for tuition. Yolo Farm to Fork needs workers to tend to crops.
“Since the school year began, student Malik Vega-Tatum has given more than 356 hours of his time to Yolo Farm to Fork, a nonprofit that supports school gardens and farm-based education. In exchange, he will receive $700 a month for 10 months from the #CaliforniansForAll College Corps program, class credit and experience with food production science. When he reaches the 450-hour mark, he’ll get a $3,000 award. He’ll graduate with $10,000 less debt and with work experience he hopes will give him an edge when he applies to medical school next year.”
It is all a part of the College Corps. “Inspired by service programs from earlier eras, the College Corps program puts low-income, first-generation students to work in education, food insecurity, and climate mitigation.”
