Perhaps you have noticed the drought conditions in North America, although recent record setting rains in the northeast and southeast have shifted the focus from droughts to floods. Even parts of the southwest are now dealing with more rain than they can handle over a short period of time.

And while we are struggling with drought conditions primarily in the southwestern United States, similar conditions are being dealt with world wide. The link to the article above documents that 2/3rds of Europe is experiencing drought conditions. No rain, combined with repeated heat waves are decimating crops. Rivers, including the Rhine, are a record lows, causing disruption to freight and drinking water in Germany. Similar problems plague the Thames river in England.

Shrinking lakes and rivers are displaying historical monuments and abandoned ships, now visible to everyone. From Spanish Stonehenge in Spain to Nazi ships in the Danube River in Serbia.

“China has been breaking heat records all summer. And the extreme temperatures and low rainfall have created a prolonged drought in China. The Yangtze River – longest river in China and third longest in the world – is withering away. The river basin is home to 450 million people and 1/3 of China’s crops, and the people there are dealing with depleted wells and brush fires.”

So while we tend to focus on ways global warming affect us here, in reality there is no escaping the current drought conditions worldwide. It certainly is starting to appear like actions we take “here” and actions being taken “there” are combining to affect us all.
